The bison mindset
The Bison Mindset is about how we, as humans, face adversity. Growing up in Colorado, I was taken by the plains of Colorado, where you can see flat land as far as the eye can see. Storms would roll off the majestic Rocky Mountains and onto the Eastern plains of Colorado. It was a fantastic sight to see. As I grew beyond my childhood, I began to understand that various animals would respond in different ways when these storms would roll through. Birds would find a place to land to wait out the storm, and the ground rodents would crawl safely into their holes. Horses would stand and turn their backs on the storm so the wind and rain or snow would not hit them in the face. While all the animals were taking cover in anticipation of the storm, two animals would respond in unique ways. First was the typical cow. The cows would also turn away from the story, but rather than stand there, they would begin to move as a herd to attempt to “outrun” the storm. This would only mean that they spent more time in the storm and would experience the storm for an extended period. Then there was the mighty bison. The bison would sense a storm coming, and it would turn directly into the storm and begin to walk majestically into it. The bison would attack the upcoming adversity head-on and remain in the storm for less time. That is what the Bison Mindset is all about. It is about creating a mindset of facing our adversities head-on with confidence. It is learning skills and creating strength of character to move us in and through the storms of life that cause most people to either run, hide, or freeze. If you are an individual or a team that would like to move as the mighty bison and grow in your ability to attack adversity, I would love to work with you to assist you in becoming a strong and mighty elite performer, just like the bison.

Arnie Guin
Arnie Guin has more than 30 years of experience as a pastor, counselor, mental skills coach and professor, worked with Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats while he was at Buffalo and made the move to Tuscaloosa to do the same in a full-time role.
Guin was a registered psychotherapist in the state of Colorado, a life skills counselor and one of the few official “mental skills coaches” in all of college basketball.
Head Coach, Nate Oats has this to say about Guin and his skills, "He has been a crucial part of the culture we were able to build at Buffalo. He brings a wisdom in dealing with people and a passion for serving others that enables everyone around him to come closer to reaching their potential. To have someone of his caliber on staff to help our players grow into high-character young men was important to me in our building of our culture."
Oats directly attributed much of the Buffalo men’s basketball program’s success during his tenure to the work Guin did behind-the-scenes with the student-athletes, coaches and staff in terms of setting the culture for the program.
During his time in the New York area, Guin operated a consulting firm in Buffalo and had a decade of experience working with athletes on their confidence and approach in life, including working with a number of professional as well as collegiate athletes across a variety of sports.
While working with the men’s basketball program, he and Oats collaborated to create “The Bulls’ Way of Life,” a year-long mental skills training curriculum that included a summer seminar, weekly meetings with the team, pregame visualizations and one-on-one counseling.
In addition to his work in the sports world, Guin has served various roles in in the ministry field, as the executive director and lead pastor of Cornerstone Church in Grand Island, N.Y., and currently Lead Pastor at Southwest Community in Littleton, CO.
Before making the move to New York, Guin was based in Colorado where he was a Registered Psychotherapist. He also worked as an Adjunct Professor at Colorado Christian University and was the Executive Director of Business and Medical Careers in Longmont, CO.
In Colorado, Guin began his working with professional athletes who competed in the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Through his work with high-profile players, Guin gained the experience and knowledge to work with elite athletes, focusing on the mental skillset needed in order to be successful both on and off the field and court.
Guin, who recently became certified in positive psychology, earned his Doctorate of Ministry from Newburgh Theological Seminary in 2011. He also holds a Masters of Divinity from Western Seminary (2000) and earned his Bachelors in Communication from Puget Sound Christian College (1997).
